Medications Were!
The more he looked into it, the more he couldn't believe these drugs had
passed the FDA's standards. Drug after drug had horrific and usually
irreversible side effects.
And the more he read, the more he realized he was seeing these exact
symptoms in his patients.
Metformin can cause lactic acidosis. This
side effect is so dangerous the FDA requires it to have a "black box"
warning on all packaging, the most severe warning the FDA can give.
Lactic acidosis is a medical emergency that must be treated in the
hospital. It causes extreme exhaustion, severe digestive issues, and even
heart attacks.
Drugs like alogliptin can cause severe joint pain and weight
gain. Drugs known as DPP-4 inhibitors like sitagliptin,
saxagliptin, linagliptin, and alogliptin received a scary warning just last
year. These drugs have been shown to cause such severe pain that some patients
have become wheelchair-bound. Others are experiencing extreme weight
gain, which is incredibly dangerous for diabetics.
Insulin's number one side effect is weight gain! Shockingly, the primary medication people take to control their blood
sugar can cause rapid weight gain. That can start a vicious cycle where
weight gain exacerbates diabetes symptoms which then require MORE insulin.
Many other drugs drop blood sugars so low that patients feel worse in
the long run. William saw this all
the time with his patients. Their blood sugar would get so low that they were
constantly shaky, dizzy, grumpy, and incredibly hungry. That would lead
them to eat foods that would make their diabetes worse. It was a vicious
cycle.
